At Crowne Plaza Hunter Valley, we acknowledge our responsibility to respect the environment and manage our impact for the benefit of the community in which we operate. We are committed to managing our impact and exploring new and innovative ways to reduce them.

 

Green Engage Program

Crowne Plaza Hunter Valley is involved in the IHG Green Engage Program. This global initiative enforces sustainable practices are upheld by all IHG properties, including measuring all energy, waste, and water usage, allowing for analysis of trends, performance tracking and action planning for the future. The program also includes a commitment to reduce carbon emissions, and implementing action items, known as “Green Solutions”.

Green Engage Solutions

- Conference jelly beans packaged in 100% eco friendly plastic
- Reusing spirit and wine bottles in Food and Beverage outlets as water bottles
- Participating in return and earn, donating the proceeds to charity
- Replaced takeway cups from the staff canteen with keep cups
- Partnering with Winnow to manage food wastage
- Paper cups and straws
- Mints served in paper boxes and made into bio diesel
- Implementation of a co-mingling waste system to reduce the Resort’s waste footprint
- Digital guest directory in all 414 rooms and villas
- Reusable tubs for the delivery of fresh food produce rather than packaging
- Seafood delivery tubs regenerated into string
- Onsite honey eliminates transport emissions
- Working with produce suppliers within 100km radius reduces transport emissions
- Reusable herb punnets
- Used oil from the kitchens is taken offsite


 

Energy Initiatives

- Installation and continued use of a full 100KW photovoltaic (solar panel) system
- 1,856 down lights and 270 tubes have been changed to LED. Continued efforts to reduce energy usage is supported each year
- Electric Vehicle Charging Station success
- Gas fire co-generation unit supplies energy to the Resort (including kitchens, back of house and golf buggy storage) and Sydney Brewery Hunter Valley. Waste heat is directed to the swimming pool and potable water for heating purposes.
- Additional Spinway bikes to encourage guests to utilise bicycles around the Resort as opposed to cars or golf buggies
- Cbus lighting controllers into all meeting rooms
- Installation of two new powerpax Air- conditioning chillers with savings of 28% energy
- Energy efficient water pumps - golf course
- Inverter air-conditioning installed
- Installed Orion Assa Abloy Room Energy Monitoring System to conserve energy and reduce the wear and tear of mechanical HVAC systems
- 100kw of (PV) solar installed for the brewery bottling plant
- New variable speed drive units for the chilled water pumps on the Chillers - installed to slow down the CWP to their nominal working capabilities


Green Engage Program

A strategy to divert away from landfill and encourage further recycling. All cardboard and glass is processed in the respective compactors, sorted, reduced and then removed from the site to be recycled. In addition the excess oil and grease from the kitchen is collected in large containers and also recycled through a local company. This resulted in 77.89% or 542.57 tonnes of all of the Resort’s waste now being recycled.

Water Initiatives

- Water hoses in the kitchen and dock were replaced with a new eco-friendly water spray system
- AAA 5 star, 5 litres/minute tap basin mixers and restrictors, and new AAA 3.5 star 7.0 litre rated shower heads
